My group and I analyzed the film opening scene of the giver. A Drama/Sci-Fi film that is a bout a perfect world where everyone is assigned with something and the main character has different views about the world. We identified the general information about the film, and The Save the Cat Beat Structure and the narrative of the film opening. The opening image, inciting incident, set up, and catalyst were all analyzed in the opening scene and were also explained.
The Save the Cat Beat Structure and the narrative continuity of the opening.
Beat I: The Opening Image | A visual image that represents the central struggle & tone of the story.

Document the setting, location (inside-outside), genre, theme, tone, the mood of the film. It includes narrative elements such as text, voice-over, etc. | (Long answer) The setting of the film takes place in this perfect utopian world where everything is perfect and futuristic. It’s a dystopian world where everybody is given a purpose, a job, and their lives are planned out for them. The location is outside for most of the opening scene at least. There seem to be themes of finding or being yourself in a world that disapproves, and that you should be yourself despite that. The tone is very dramatic as the opening scene consists of long shots and dialogue from the main character who feels like he’s seeing the world he inhabits in a different light. The mood is serious and it’s not exactly lighthearted, it’s setting up the story in a way that the audience feels they will get an important message out of viewing this film. The narration in the beginning from the main character introduces the viewer to the world and that universes rules and how it all operates.

Beat II: The Inciting Incident | It is the central theme or premise of the film. The message, the truth you want to reveal by the end of your screenplay.

Describe Beat II | (Long answer) The secondary characters coming into the story begin to talk to Jonas about getting their jobs and finding their purpose in that society. During this part of the opening scene, one of the characters comically yells, begging to not get stuck with the job of Waste Manager. It implies that their lives are set up for them, and they don’t get to choose how they live their lives. This sets up the conflict between the main character and the society he lives in. It sets up the main purpose for the movie: to show the audience how the main character overcomes this issue and embraces individuality. The main character has to find his purpose and maybe his purpose lies outside of the society he inhabits.
Beat III: The Set-Up | Introduction of the main characters in the film and an expansion of the opening image.
| |||
Describe Beat III | (Long answer) Jonas, the main character, narrates the opening scene, describing the world that he lives in. Even though his entire life has been laid out for him, he feels as though he sees the world differently. When he tells the audience this, we see that he sees the world in a colorful way at times. From this, the audience can infer that Jonas wants more out of his life. He feels that he’s missing his purpose and he wants to know what it is since it seems everyone around him already knows what they want to do for their futures.

Beat IV: Catalyst | A life-changing event that causes a significant change in the main character's life. • A moment where the opportunity to go on a journey is presented to the main character. • Life as it is, is changing.
Describe Beat I | (Long answer) The opening sequence hints that later in the beginning of the film, Jonas will be given a different role or job that changes his perception of the world as he knew it. He sees his world as a perfect utopia but feels that there is more to life than the society which he inhabits and that’s highlighted by the color he claims to see at times. It shows that he sees the world differently and that he doesn’t want to fit the mold of his society. He wants to find more out of life and along with that, he wants to go out and find his true purpose.
